Enzymes can be of both animal and vegetable origin.  Both have different but complementary properties.  In their own right each are extremely effective and experience shows that the best results are generally achieved with a combination of both types.

Animal derived enzymes must be prepared in enteric coated (acid resistant) tablets to ensure that they pass intact through the stomach and are delivered into the small intestine, where the coating dissolves and the tablet contents are released in the alkaline conditions of the gut.  They are then re-absorbed through the intestinal wall and pass into the bloodstream.  Vegetable enzymes can remain active in an acidic (low pH) environment and at relatively high temperatures.  By contrast, those of animal sources are generally most effective at normal body temperatures and at pH values closer to the neutral or alkaline end of the scale.

Enzymes are completely natural, and work literally by supplementing the body’s natural enzyme resources which, for a variety of reasons – e.g. age, general ill health, poor nutrition, stress etc. – may not always be sufficient to meet emergency or chronic needs.  The term “systemic enzyme therapy” is used when enzymes are supplemented to relieve a number of conditions involving both acute and chronic inflammation, oedema (swelling), haematoma and pain.  They are taken away from food (consequently they are not used to aid the digestive process) so that the enzymes can be distributed throughout the body via the bloodstream in order to reach the sites where their properties can be of value.
